Steve Almond comments on alternatives to RDF in RWM´s blog:
With rising UK landfill tax in recent years we’ve seen the volume of material we send to landfill decline and recycling rates rise. Alongside this, operators spotted a commercial opportunity in RDF and SRF production for energy generation via combustion. And we’re not talking about a small opportunity: last year, the UK exported two million tonnes of RDF.
In dramatically reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill, we’ve created another problem by exporting valuable waste to be used as a fuel for European energy plants. There will always be a market for RDF – in Europe or here in the UK as more plants start to come on stream but while continuing to develop our own domestic infrastructure, we should also be looking to invest in C&I and MSW MRFs to recover valuable resources. Recovery at MRFs is arguably a more commercially, economically and environmentally attractive alternative to RDF.
